Netgear router could not connect to the Internet

I just bought a Netgear Wireless Router to replace the current Linksys
router we had been using for years. The setup wizard could not find the
Internet connection. I checked all the cable connections but still could
not get the IP address from the cable modem. I could get the wireless
router to work when connect it to the uplink port of the Linksys router. Is
there any major setup difference between a Linksys and a Netgear router?

Many Cable systems set up the cable modem so that it will only work with
the first MAC address it "sees" after a power up. Have you tried power
cycling the cable modem after connecting the Netgear router?
