I, too, am getting what seem to be conflicting indications from my
Netgear router (Model: MR814v2 Cable/DSL Wireless router) after at least
two years of flawless service. I have 5 computers that were connecting
to the net thru this router -- two Dell laptops (XPHome and XPPro OSs),
one Dell desktop (XPHome OS) and two desktops I put together myself
(Fedora Core 5 and Fedora Core 6). One day recently my wife (on the
laptop with XPHome) told me she'd lost net connections so I tried the
usual fixes (first, I powercycled the system with no change and, second,
I reset the router to factory defaults, reset security, but regained
only "limited connectivity" on her laptop.
I've tried configuring her laptop's wireless set-up with both the
Dell Utility (the utility used when the machine arrived from Dell) and
with Windows but cannot get more than "limited Connectivity". However,
if I connect this laptop to the net by cable the access is normal and at
full strength.
Thinking the problewm might be a bad wireless card in her machine,
I tried using a Netgear 802.11b (16-bit PCMCIA Model MA401) wireless
card but again got only "limited conncetivity" so that seemd to rule out
the "bad card" idea.
When I check "connection status" inside the router, it appears that
the router is either capturing the wrong IP from the laptop or not
capturing any IP from the laptop (the former after a router
"reset-to-factory" and the latter from time to time). However, it is
capturing the correct IPs from the other machines in use. The would seem
to suggest the router is the culprit except that I am presently
connected to the net and this newsgrouo (by cable) on the Dell XPHome
desktop.
I can't see the common thread in any of this other than that
"wireless operation" is the problem on this particular laptop (the other
laptop works fine in wireless mode) and am pretty much at a dead-end for
what to try next for a fix. Any suggestions?
