Netgear MR814 Router hook up problems

I am trying to get a Netgear MR814v2 router to hook directly via LAN
cable to my Dell 8250 running XP Professional. No luck. The cables
are correctly wired, I went through all the sequences (Netgear CD) -
reboot - reboot/reset router etc., and the computer does not recognize
the LAN connection. The indicated IP/DNS etc make no sense when I
check these.

I am getting to the point where I think the MR814v2 is physically NG.

any suggestions etc.
