I have a 3Com OfficeConnect (great little modem). I've used it with a
Dlink & Steedstream router, before I got cable access.
What I think you need to do is connect the Netgear to the 3Com. Does
the Netgear have an Up-link port??? If so connect that to the 3Com.
If not you my need a cross-over cable. Plug a computer into the 3Com.
do a release/renew and make sure your getting an IP address from it.
The 3Com should give you a 192.168.1.XXX, like you said. Now commect
the Netgear to the 3Com. On the WAN side (the side connected to the
3Com) you should have and IP in the 192.168.1.XXX range. This is what
the 3com is giving to the Netgear. (This is OK). Now connect a pc to
the Netgear and do a release/renew. You should get a 192.168.0.XXX IP
address, (again this is OK).
You should be able to connect to the Netgear URL and SEE that IP
address is on the Wan side and what IP addresses it has give out to
the pc's . You should be able to connect to the internet with this
set-up. Your request for a web page is passed to the Netgear, this is
then passed to the 3Com and it starts to dial-out.. HOPE this is of
some help...
