Hey all,
Weird problem, that I know little about. A few days ago I
finally got broadband and a wireless router. The router is a Netgear
MR814v2 and setting it up was a breeze. I have two Dell laptops, a
Inspiron 4150 and a Inspiron 8200. My Inspiron 4150 has a Dell
Truemobile 1180 Mini-pci card installed and the wireless capabilities
are everything I could hope for. Signal strength and distance are
perfectly adequate. The Inspiron 8200 has a Dell Truemobile 1150
Mini-pci card and the connection is terrible. The signal strength is
terrible, as in being 1 room 15 ft away will give a marginal
connection while the Inspiron 4150 shows very good or excellent. More
impportantly disconnects occur with the Truemobile 1150 card, that
never happens with the 1180. I've upgraded the firmware on the router,
and upgraded to the newest Dell 1150 driver, but to no avail. I would
think the router just sucks if the 1180 truemobile didn't work so
effectively. What could be the problem? Both laptops are using the
same settings. Are the two just uncompatible?

Unfortunately, not all wireless adapters are created equal. I had the
exact same problem with two Linksys products. They were both the same
distance from the access point, yet one had an excellent signal while the
other was marginal. Drivers, tweaks, tech support....nothing helped. So
I just bought another adapter that simply worked, and it was cheap.

It sounds like you could be suffering the same thing as I did. My guess
is that whatever problems Dell had with the 1150 were fixed in the 1180.
Is it possible to replace the 1150? --Jago

Netgear and DellTM X50 have always had problems, check out the Dell
forums. These devices just do not like each other for some reason but
your best bet in getting things working is the Dell forums for sure.

Upgrade the firmware on the Netgear; there's a new rev out 5.30(?)
that clears this all up. I have an Inspiron 8200 and a Intel 2150
card (same thing as you).
