Netgear ME102 HELP!

I am very new to WiFi, this is my first adventure and need some help. I have a
Netgear ME102 access point. I am running Windows 2000. I have a 8 port hub.
The installation utility is telling me I have frameware version 1.4h and AP
Utility version 1.5.

I have installed the drivers for the ME102. I have installed both the USB and
the SNMP configuration Utility. I am trying to understand the documentation
and apply my 'little' system knowledge but am lost.

I have the USB port connected to the ME102 and I open the USB configuration
Utility, I read the configuration of the ME102 and it seems to have some
strange (to me) settings. For example, the access point name is ||, the IP
address is 170.187.204.13, the subnet mask is 10.170.254.34, the MAC ID
doesn't match (even close) to what the MAC ID on the label of the Access Point
is.

That being said, I update the information (I am not real sure what I am
updating is correct but) and when I am finished with all the updates I click
on set to to save the changes. If I exit the utility and restart it, read the
configuration it is back to where it was to start with, not any of my changes
were saved.

I am watching my desktop with a sniffer and am seeing a couple of UDP traffics
from source address 10.170.254.34 (that is what the configuration has listed
as the subnet mask not the IP address) but lost as to where to go from here.

Why can't I set (or save the information), what should the ip address and
subnet mask be set to? I have tried to reinstall every thing, cold start but
can not seem to get the USB configuration to save any of the changes I make.

Past that, what is the proper setup? Do I have to do the USB configuration and
then do the SNMP configuration? When I try to open the SNMP configuration
utility I get a error message (set AP to same subnet) but again, using the USB
configuration tool I can not get my changes to save.

I know, darn new guy!! But I am in over my head this time, please help

Thanks

I'm using the ME102. I'll try to help, but don't understand the problems
you are having. For example, is the ME102 set to get a DHCP address? If
so, where would it get the address?

You note you have a hub. Is that the extent of your network? Does your
computer or computers have a specific IP address set (or are they
receiving a DHCP address)?

Anyway, since mine is installed permanently in a stairwell, I won't be
pulling it to connect by the USB port. Try connecting it to the hub your
computer is connected to, then running the SNMP facility. If you can
connect properly from that, you should be able to set the parameters you
need.

Thank you Jerry for you offer to help.

Yes, basically I have three Windows 2000 computers running, each with a
ethernet card, They connect to the 8 port hub and now I have connected the
Netgear ME102 to the hub.

The main desktop has its address fixes at 192.168.0.1 with a subnet mask of
255.255.255.0. I had to set that so I could use and share the modem from the
main desktop. The other computers receive a DHCP address when they start up.
The little network seems to work fine to let me share the modem and transfer
files.

I don't know where ther Access Point got the information. I loaded the drivers
for the Access point, loaded the USB and the SNMP utility software. I then
plugged the Access Point into my hub and plugged it into the USB Port and
restarted Windows.

When I try to use the SNMP utility it sees the Access Point and shows its
address as 10.179.254.34. Then when I try to configure I get a error message
that says: please set the AP in the same domain. I am not sure what or where
to do that.

I do see in the documentation information about assigning IP address with the
arp -s command but I am not sure what IP address to use there AND as I noted
the MAC ID in the USB utility is different than what is on the label on the
bottom of the Access Point. I am not sure what to use there?

So I am stuck on that BUT even before that, when I use the USB utility, I make
changes and they do not seem to be saved with the set command.

Am I corrected that I need to use the USB utility and then re-enter the
information again in the SNMP utility or are they two ways of doing the same
thing? Also use the arp -s setting?

How can I get the USB utility to save using the set button in the USB utility?

I assume my IP address should be something set in the 192.168.0.xxx range with
a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0?

I'm having difficulty understanding how your network is working at all.
You have apparently set the IP of the 'main' computer to a static
address of 192.168.0.1 . That is fine, but you don't seem to have any
system which can assign a DHCP address (no router, etc.). So each of
your computers should have an address in the 192.168.0.x range set as a
static address. The ME102 should also have a 192.168.0.x address.

Frankly, if you can't set the values from the USB utility, and can't
connect/change values with the SNMP utility, I suspect the unit is
defective.

The computers do receive an address in the 192.168.0.xxx ranges but only the
main desktop is static. Under the network properties for the other computers I
have the settings (on the network card) in TCP/IP (general tab) set for
'Obtain an IP address automatically'. I am not sure it is the correct way but
seems to work.

Darn, I was hoping I was just doing something wrong and not ending up with a
defective unit. I just obtained it used but guess it could be defective.

Am I corrected that I need to use the USB utility and then re-enter the
information again in the SNMP utility or are they two ways of doing the same
thing? Also use the arp -s setting?

Sorry. I still don't understand your network setup. SOMETHING is
providing DHCP addresses to the computers which don't have static
addresses. If those addresses are in the same range (192.168.0.x), then
there is a DHCP server active on your network somewhere. Since something
is providing addresses to some of your computers, it is possible that
the same something is providing an address to your ME102.

It might be best to simplify your network temporarily in an effort to
eliminate the influence of unknown servers. Try connecting the ME102 to
your 'main' computer with a crossover cable. That is, eliminate the hub
for a moment but use the ethernet connection. Try the SNMP facility. Any
luck now?

As to the second question: The SNMP and the USB facility are supposed to
do the same thing. Either should be sufficient. As to arp -s, I've no
idea.

Yes, the DHCP Client is running in my Windows 2000 desktop system,

Ok I will have to find a cross over cable, all I have is straight cables here
to try it direct. Getting late, I am getting frustrated so might be time to
call it a night.

Thanks your all your help and your patience.

Use the USB utility to set the unit back to its Factory Defaults.
You will find it under the Operational Setting Tab.
Press OK then unplug the USB lead and power cycle it.

Then reconnect the USB lead and set up the administrator password.
Then go to the IP settings tab and set its IP address to one in your LAN
subnet, 192.168.0.10 or something similar.
Then press Apply.
Power cycle it for good luck then see if the SNMP utility will find it.
