Netgear DG834G(UK) - empty "Attached Devices" list

I was installing a Netgear DG834G(UK) router to replace a customer's
existing BT 1800 (?) router which has never worked properly.

Everything worked well as was easy to set up - as I've come to expect from
Netgear - but there was one funny: the "Attached Devices" list on the
router's config page, which should list the IP, MAC and computer name of
each computer that's connected to the router, always remains empty. I've
never seen this with any other DG834G or DG834GT that I've installed:
normally as soon as a device connects and is given an IP address, it shows
up in the list. It affected both wired and wireless connections. I'm not
sure what version of the firmware was installed.

It's not a big deal, but I just wondered whether anyone else had seen the
problem.

Incidentally, that BT router really had big problems. It took about 5
minutes to get going properly after being reset or powered-off. Its DHCP
seemed to work only occasionally for wireless: more often than not, PCs
would get a wireless connection but would time out while trying to get an IP
address, so I had to set the IPs of all the PCs statically. Wireless
connections dropped out very frequently, even though all the PCs were in the
same room and were between 5 and 20 metres away. Frequently it would lose
the ability to route traffic between PCs, even though they still had
internet access. On one PC I set up two DOS windows each running a ping -t:
one to news.bbc.co.uk (external) and one to another PC on the LAN. And the
LAN one kept coming up "destination unreachable" and then righting itself
after a few minutes, while the WAN one carried on regardless. What a pile of
crap!

Out of interest I just checked in with a couple of mine.

One DG834G in the UK with fixed IP LAN hosts shows a list of four attached
devices and they were known to the router just from the ARP poll that
selecting "Attached Devices" initiates. But another in New York uses DHCP
and, even though I can happily chat to the one attached LAN host with
pcAnywhere, the DG834G's list of attached devices is empty. So the
function is flakey and unreliable.

My routers all run V2.10.22 which was the last one to allow WAN access to
LAN servers.

In general the router functions seem reasonably good but, because of
problems with AP wireless and modem functions I've been retiring these
units. I maxed at running seven and am now down to just 4, and even one
of those 4 has its wireless turned off and a separate Motorola AP added on
the LAN side.

DG834Gs have a super set of specifications and features but both hardware
and software problems prevent them from doing what their specs lead me to
expect.

Yes, I have one I remotely admin for, is running 1.05.00 firmware and that
one is reporting no connected devices in 'Attached Devices', when I know
full well there is current network activity by the users connected to it.

So yes, its not just you.

I have upgraded all my two 834Gs t the latest firmware and both of them show
all the connected devices fine.

What version of firmware do you use? I'm using the latest here on mine.

This router is on whatever firmware it was supplied with: probably 1.05.00
unless Netgear have started supplying stock with the latest web-released
firmware installed, instead of the out-of-date 1.05.00. If the customer
reports it as a problem (which I doubt he will - he's probably never even
going to visit the config pages) I'll go back and install the latest
firmware for him.

Yes, its highly likely that he is still on 1.05.00, as the recent ones I got
(December 2005) were still being supplied with that firmware version.

Cheers

Oh, so that's what that is supposed to do! I run a Netgear DG814 (the wired
only version of what you are talking about I think) with a fixed IP LAN and
there has never been anything listed. Doesn't stop it working in my plain
old setup.
