Hi

I have a Netgear DG834G ADSL router/modem

If I surf using HTTP to the external IP address I get the login prompt
to log in to the router.

This is not good for security but I cant seem to disable it,

Any ideas ?

I don't think you are logging in remotely, you're being redirected
from the external address to the internal one as the router recognises
that the traffic is coming from inside the LAN.

Yes, I've just tried this with my Netgear DG834GT. As you say, when I browse
to your WAN address while connected by Ethernet or wireless, I get the login
prompt. However I then disconnected my PC from the LAN and dialled in to a
different ISP. Now if I browse to the WAN address I get no response, so the
router isn't really letting me in from the outside.

Not really, but I did anyway and just as I suspected, nothing.

>could you knock me offline with a DOS attack ?

Assuming you're on a dynamic IP, I wouldn't worry about DoS (DOS
attack would be fun though, I'd love someone to try one of those).
Someone finds your IP, starts hitting it so you reboot your router,
problem solved.
