I would appreciate comments from users of the latest non-beta firmware for
the DG834G MkII. I want to upgrade a unit from 1.05.00 but don't want to
introduce problems. Two questions for anyone with experience of this
firmware:

1. Does the latest firmware support WPA-PSK reliably as I tried with this
unit and it failed on 1.05.00
2. Does the latest firmware support VPN?

Oh and where do I get the latest firmware from and are there many dangers in
doing an upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any advice / info.

Tony

Well, the Netgear support site is always a good start!

I find 2.0.22 very stable. WPA-PSK works very reliably as do the other
features. The only problem I have is that GRE passthrough doesn't work,
which breaks PPTP-based VPNs. I've got a call open with Netgear, but
their support ain't great.

I have 1.05.00 on my DG834, working fine other some occasioanl drops of the
sync signal but I think thats more to do with BT than the router.

Does anyone actually bother to have the latest firmware on their router-
should I bother, or is it a case of it its not broke, dont fix it???

Tim, Ive just upgraded my Netgear from 1.05.00 to 2.10.22 and its working
great. I wanted to try the VPN stuff and see what else is new in there. I
also needed to get WPA-PSK working, and the 1.05.00 firmware didn't work
very well with WPA. It seems this new firmware is working a treat with
WPA-PSK. Upgrade took only a couple of minutes. Unless you want to upgrade
for a reason, then no, I guess you don't need to upgrade. But I needed the
extra features that they have added, plus 1.05.00 is now quite old.

There have been reports of better/more stable ADSL performance with the
new firmware, and for me personally, it fixed a problem where I'd make
a change to its configuration and the wireless interface would stop
working. I think 2.10.22 is mature enough to trust, it's been around
for a while now (but then so has XP :-)

I've never flashed / updated firmware on anything before, but i'll give it a
go in this case I think. It seems pretty foolproof according to the Netgear
website...

If you never see anymore posts from me, it failed!

When you've finished you will get a worrying "404 Page Not Found" error
message on the administration pages help window. Just reboot the DG834
and it will right itself.
