Netgear DG834G - attached devices : a bug?

I have a netgear DG834G V2 and have a problem with the 'attached
devices' page.

It shows lan connections ok but is hit and miss with wireless
connections.

The norm is that it does not show wireless connections to the router.
Wirless connections include wlan card 10Mb and Netgear usb adapter
wg121.
I've connected only with wireless and the router shows no attached
devices!

I've 2 of these routers - one faulty and being returned - and both have
the same problem. And both have been updated to the latest firmware and
still the problem persists.

Sometimes you will see a wireless device attached - click refresh and
it dissappears.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?

Yep. I get the same thing on my DG834G (V1) running the latest
firmware. I have always used MAC filtering and port forwarding so I do
need to look up the addresses of attached devices and I get there in
the end but with little help from the router.

I have also noticed of late that wireless connections seem up and down
like a yo-yo. This is affecting two laptops at the same time so it
seems a router problem rather than a laptop problem. In fact over the
past couple of weeks I've flicked back and forth between the current
firmware and the previous release. But the thing is still up and down
like a whore's drawers. When the connections do drop there is no sign
at all on the router that anything is amiss - all the correct lights
remain lit. But even Netstumbler sees it one minute and loses it the
next.

I've done factory resets and so on, redefined all settings manually
and also tried restoring backed up config files but still the thing is
flapping about. I've got to admit that after almost two relatively
problem free years this thing is now really starting to annoy me.

I'm using the V3.01.25 firmware. I have not noticed any problems with
this or earlier versions.

Not sure why yours is hit and miss, but this might partly explain the issue:

http://forum1.netgear.com/support/viewtopic.php?t=15148

You'll note the the Attached Devices page takes a few seconds to
display... well, I *think* this is because it sends out UDP packets to
each address on the LAN subnet and waits for a response. If a device
does not respond, it doesn't appear on the list even though it *is*
attached to the network and working fine!

So as for your problems being intermittant, I'd be inclined to suspect
either failing hardware or (perhaps more likely) radio interference?

You could try switching to another channel; you might want to read up on
this first. I think the channels overlap each other a little, so hopping
from ch13 to ch12 might not help. It might be better to try to jump 4 or
more channels.

Cheers!

Peter.
