I have a Netgear DG834 ADSL modem/router and prior to broadband arrival
(in early February) am trying to configure a LAN using it as a
hub/router.

All four PCs are set up as instructions in the DG834 manual but no
network connections work. Cabling is straight through, as the manual
suggested that this would be automatically sorted out - but does this
machine really require twisted pair?

I'm a total beginner at this - could it be that the network will not
function until ADSL arrives????

Thanks

CJ

It might help if you told us what you expected to happen when you connected
the computers, and what actually happened.

Can you access your DG834 from your PC?
If not, you need configure your PC to same rang of IP address and same subnet.
If you have no clue, read quick Installation guide which came with your DG834.
also install software and copy user refarence guide from cd and read it to how to use.

according to Manual, DG834 addressed IP address 192.168.0.1
you need set up your pc's IP address 192.168.0.2
or 192.168.0.3 or 192.168.0.4 something like that.
(each PC must have uniqe IP address but same range as router)
also setup Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
then you can access router,
also if you already create account on all of your pc for each PCs.
and setup File and printer share, you can access that.

If you still have problem,
post detail procces (what you did) and detail of problem (including complete error message)

I followed the user manual and all the steps on the setup CD. All
indicate that the router will automatically assign an IP address - but I
see from the result in "winipcfg" that I'll have to setup manually as
you suggest.....

Until DSL arrives here in two weeks time I was hoping that I could get
the router to run our new network in order to be fully ready and
firewall/virus protected in advance. Will the DG834 operate in this way
as just a network router? And until then I need to keep my dial-up
operational - any problems in this configuration?

Many thanks

CJ

I'm using SIS 900 fast ethernet cards on Windows 98SE - I've just read
on a forum http://www.driversearch.com/forums/video/5706.html that these
are not compaible with this operating system. Is this true?

Thanks

CJ

Thanks JR K - I have discovered that it was an interrupt conflict -
having moved the Ethernet card to a different PCI slot. I can get into
the router!

Regards
