I'm really getting pi**ed off with this damn router now. It's the same old
problem of the router just locking up and not responding for apparently no
reason.

I've tried the firmware versions 4.8, 4.9RC1 & 4.9RC3 - none of which fix
the problem. At the moment I'm having to reset the router every 2 hours, as
you can't even access it via the web console.

Netgear support do not reply to my emails.

Even though the product is out of warranty, is it fit for the purpose it was
sold? Do I have any statutory rights here to be able to get my money back
or something that works?

Many thanks,
Steve

Sounds like a hardware problem as my DG814 just keeps going without the slightest
problem for weeks on end - it has not gone wrong once with 4.9RC3!

Are you using something like eDonkey/Overnet or other p2p clients which
generate alot of UDP traffic? I had exactly the same problems and sent
my dg814 back (after having been issued with a replacement incase I had
a faulty unit).

The box does say "MP3s can be downloaded in a fraction of the time.
...." Not of it keeps crashing they can't!

I still have my sat in a cupboard but have switched to a Thomson 510v4
which has been rock solid.

Regards,
-Darran

Xolox v1.57.

Do I take it this is the issue then?

I had the same problem with eDonkey, I switch to eMule and my DG814 is fine.

I am still running 4.7!
I am waiting for 4.9 to be officially released.

You probably have some P2P running a go-go... Well, as far as I have
seen so far, no router I have tried can keep up with the fast pace of
these very demanding programs...

One thing you can do to lighten the burden of your router is to disable
the DHCP server and assign a different IP to each computer connected to
your network.

It won't stop the hanging, but will reduce it significantly.

If anyone knows about any other possible solution, here we are,
listening :-)

There is a 3 year warranty on mine, how old is yours?

Just over a year. I'll dig out the warranty card, I thought it was just a
statutory 1 year thing.

Well, I'm not sure this counts as a solution. However, I believe the
problem is caused by the NAT translation tables filling up when large
numbers of connections are used. One way around this is to use static IPs
for all machines on your network. Note here, I mean proper public IPs, not
private IPs that have to be NAT'd. In my case, I have a routed /29, which
means that the router does not need to keep the translation tables, so the
problem never occurs.
Another possible solution, if your router supports it, is to run in half
bridge mode. In this mode, the router effectively acts like a modem, and
all traffic is sent to the first machine that gets a network connection.
However, in this mode, only a single PC will work with the router. I have
no idea if this option is available with the DG814.
