Hi everyone,

I am going to change my existing home network to a wirelss one -The network
is only really used to share the intenet connection...
I have looked and looked to find a wireless modem/router (as I am on ADSL)
and two products have caught my eye but I dont know which is the best to
chose from...can any of you guys share your opinions - I really appreciate
it.

Netgear 802.11b Wireless ADSL Modem Router with 4 Port Switch - 11Mbps
http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/pages...80&afid=105749

or

Belkin ADSL Modem With Bulit-in Wireless 802.11g Router
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...=52384&_LOC=UK

They both seem quite similair and I have heard of both manufacturers - any
advice is very much appreciated

Thnx

Sy

As you're in the UK, you may want to keep an eye/post on
uk.telecom.broadband and uk.comp.home-networking.

However, to comment on the models you have choosen

The Netgear DG824M has been replaced by the DG834G.

As with the Belkin, Netgear have updated it to support 802.11g and its
virtually the same price (or cheaper) than the DG824M.

Hence consider the DG834G vs Belkins product (model: F5D7630). (those are
the two I am looking at as well)

www.edirectory.co.uk seems expensive - in the UK, Amazon and ebuyer seem to
have good prices on both of these models.

The Linksys WAG54G is also due to be released next month and appears
slightly cheaper (according to http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/) so you may
want to consider that as well, if you can wait for a month or so

Another good place to keep an eye on is
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist...oard=dslrouter

I'd be interested in whatever you finally decide - though I would also add
that if the network is only used to share the internet connect then cheaper
equipment which supports 802.11b (instead of 802.11g) is fine - maybe
something like Quickfind code 47452 on ebuyer.com

Regards
Sunil

The wireless G is faster 54Mbps (oppose to 11Mbps on the wireless B),
although your adapter on each machine have to be G to use the high speed, it
also backward compartible with B so your B adapter will still work fine but
at 11Mbps.
Hope that make your choice clearer

It really is a matter of Taste! as I have the Linksys WRT54G-UK with the
wireless Linksys PCI card on the 2nd computer and I had set it up in 5
minutes flat it really is that simple! there very fast but you won't get the
54 mbps unless your in the same room, but mine is on another floor and I get
between 11mbps and 18 mbps.
This is a fantastic piece of kit and so easy to use I would recommend it in
your list...

between 11-18mbps?

Thanks,
Walter

You just move your pointer over the local Area connection icon in the lower
right corner on the computer that has the wireless card, and it tells you
what speed you are connected..

I am having a NIGHTMARE getting Belkin ADHOC to work between two PC's, got
the wireless USB adapters and they are terrible.

Doing it for a friend, h ad to phone tech support about a month ago and
second line support took two hours on the phone to sort our problems. Seems
my friend has experienced other PC problems and has had to reinstall
Windows, and again the wireless is fecked with no easy fix.

I own an IT company and fix PC's all day long, I know a dodgy product when I
see one - and trust me, these devices are shit. Too many problems to list
im afraid.

Have you thought about D-Link? I got the d-link equipment setup in around
20 minutes and the speeds are great - no technical problems either.

I have the Belkin. I had no major problems setting up the wireless,
other than giving the advice first set the thing with no security.
Then tighten it down.
I didn't get the USB adapters, although one issue I had was resolved
by a driver update for the PCI card. The Belkin support site is easy
to navigate.

In terms of the router I think there is a problem with its handling of
the MTU. If the client's PC MTU is set higher than the router (I
believe 1454) then uploading to web/posting emails longer than a few k
etc you may experience issues with. Once MTU lowered it works fine. I
believe they will be issuing a firmware fix in the newyear - although
Belkin support is a little unclear!

Speed varies quite a lot, however the router is at the top corner of
the house and the wireless PC is the bottom corner through a number of
reasonably substantial walls.

For the price I don't think its a bad bit of kit (£128 from insight)
and once I had resolved the MTU kit i'm happy with it

Hi I think these are much cheaper, and we are running AD HOC no router etc.
Somethign is seriously wrong somewhere - I will be on phone to tech support
today, I will let you all know what we do to fix it., and more importantly
what the hell has gone wrong .
