I have successfully set up a home network using the 824M, however. The one
thing that really bugs me is that there's never item connection icon in my
system tray so I have no idea when the connection is good or when it
disconnects. Anyone else have this issue?

Control Panel -
Network Connections -
Select Your LAN Connection -
Properties -
Tick Box that says to Show Icon in Notification area etc.
