How can I disable NETBIOS over TCP/IP setting in win98.
It is preset and grayed out and I can't change it in the
network setting/properties. It is preset to enable
NETBIOS over TCP/IP.

There is a good writeup on how to do this at:

<http://grc.com/su-bondage.htm>

That would help you with NetBUEI but not NetBIOS the two are similar but
entirely different protocols.

Read the Warnings such as This Registry hack may disable/impair your
connection(s) IF using the NetBIOS protocol over LAN/WAN/Peer-to-Peer (P2P)
network(s)/internet!

Yes they are different. The grc site provides a procedure for removing
the NetBIOS over TCP (NetBT) networking. It replaces the link with the
non-routable (safer) NetBEUI in order to anchor the NetBIOS protocol
and to provide local networking capability without exposing yourself
via TCP/IP. If you don't do this, NetBIOS "goes away" and must be
reinstalled if needed later.

I much prefer disabling NetBT via the control panel rather than poking
around in the registry and risk disabling my computer.

FWIW,
John
