Yes, it's only for Lans. In fact, to be more precise, it's only for subnets
since it can't route. Its based on a 2-dimensional, flat, non-hierarchical
network structure, unlike tcp/ip and dns.

What about a WINS server or LMHOSTS file providing NetBIOS name
resolution when using TCP/IP on a multi-subnet routed network?
