If I want to read a linux machine with an xp machine. I can connect with the
linux machine to the xp node, but cannot connect the xp machine to read the
linux machine. Is there a good site for networking with linux and xp? Do I
need netbeui on the xp machine?

Nope, linux doesnt talk netbeui. stick with IP protocol.

(What microsoft calls tcp/ip , also includes udp over ip, icmp over ip ...
etc.. all part of the Internet Protocol Family )
