NETBeui protocol

I'm in the middle of my first windows server 2003 installation, and I
noticed that there's no support for NETBeui. Is there a reason that it got
dropped? I actually use it for intranet communication, since it doesn't
support routing, and hence can't be accessed over the internet.

Any pointers on how to install it, or what to replace it with?

Thanks,
Chris

Using private address IP ranges in the system creates the same effect
because they are also not compatible with the Internet, are not routable
over the Internet, and hence can not be accessed from over the Internet.

Here are the three RFC specified Private Address Ranges

10.0.0.0 -- 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 -- 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 -- 192.168.255.255

If you are going to be using it as a domain controller tcp/ip is required.
Use a firewall to prevent access to your network from the internet. Windows
2003 Server also has a built in ICF firewall. Some of the security features
on Windows 2003 such as ipsec requires tcp/ip. Though I have not tried it
the article in the link below suggests a way to install netbeui on Windows
2003. --- Steve

Thanks! I'm using the third address range, so the intranet should be safe.

Thanks -- saw the article about installing NetBEUI on XP, but didn't know if
it would work on 2003.

The chances are it will work, as XP and 2003 are quite similar.

I wouldn't recommend using NetBEUI, though. You'll need TCP/IP as well in
order to do anything useful and having multiple network protocols rarely
provides any benefit.
