Hello-

i am trying to connect my linux box to an existing apple talk printer.
this is what i've done so far:

configure, make'd, and make install'ed netatalk 1.6.4
created /usr/local/etc/netatalk/atalk.conf with the text "eth0"
edited /etc/services in order to add:

rtmp 1/ddp # Routing Table Maintenance Protocol
nbp 2/ddp # Name Binding Protocol
echo 4/ddp # AppleTalk Echo Protocol
zip 6/ddp # Zone Information Protocol

afpovertcp 548/tcp # AFP over TCP
afpovertcp 548/udp

from bash, i then type "atalkd", "afpd", and "papd" to start the
services (btw, can this be done automatically???)

then, from bash, i then run nbplkup and it returns:
Mark Fonnemann's LaserWriter:LaserWriter 21.90:128

again, from bash, i then run aecho "Mark Fonnemann's
LaserWriter":LaserWriter and it returns:

14 bytes from 21.90: aep_seq=0. time=53. ms
14 bytes from 21.90: aep_seq=1. time=28. ms
14 bytes from 21.90: aep_seq=2. time=67. ms
14 bytes from 21.90: aep_seq=3. time=27. ms
14 bytes from 21.90: aep_seq=4. time=42. ms
14 bytes from 21.90: aep_seq=5. time=66. ms
14 bytes from 21.90: aep_seq=6. time=25. ms

----21.90 AEP Statistics----
7 packets sent, 7 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 25/44/67

Using <printconf>, i then assign the following:

printer spool name, "markfspool"
printer description, "printer"
printer queue type (locally connected, custom device /dev/null)
printer driver, Apple LaserWriter 4/600PS driver

but finally when i try to print nothing happens. i've heard that i
should be creating a .paprc file inside my spool folder with the text:
"Mark Fonnemann's LaserWriter":LaserWriter@*

but isn't the spool folders dynamically created and deleted in redhat
9?? so, how can this be done??? what am i missing here?? i'm really
stuck and all tutorials on the web appear to be out of date for the
current releases of netatalk and redhat9. please help!!! any
suggestions, comments, help would be greatly appreciated. thanks....

mark.:-)

see the thread "Re: netatalk 1.6.4 problem" dated 15 december 2003 in
the group comp.protocols.appletalk for the solution to this problem.
