NET SNED requirement in Windows 2003

Hello,

We would like to know whether the messenger service is not required (not
must) in windows 2003 for sending the pop up message to other window
workstation.

From my past experience in other windows O/S, such as Windows NT and Windows
XP, the messenger service must be started then the send and recieve pop up
message could be work properly.

However, I found in Windows 2003, the send message could work even the
messenger service is disabled. I wonder it is new feature in windows 2003
or bug...... as I would make use this function to send the message to
others.

Anyone could help to answer this question...

I belive the messenger service is required only for receiving messages.
