When it happens, the network says it's OK, and the modem
says it's OK. I just read an article in the Wall Street
Journal that said this can be caused by using the same
frequency as neighbors. Is this true, and if so, how can
I fix it?

Could be that, or a nearby 2.4 GHz telephone also. Try changing your SSID
and the default Workgroup name of your LAN, plus moving the channel. If
you're using Channel 6, try using 1 or 11.

Is there an advantage to a longer or shorter SSID? Mine
is a bit long and I've wondered, but not tried, if a
shorter one would somehow reduce the number of dropped
connections I get.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Ken
