Net send command

Hi,
In Server 2k3 AD, when I use Net send from a PC commandline to another
domain member, I get an error message and the message never reaches the
destination. I tried with NetBIOS name, FQDN and IP address but all the
same. The syntax I use is: net send DESTINATION MESSAGE. I started the
messenger service on the client PC but still no use.
Any hints please.
Thanks
Yba

Hi!

Can you type "net view \\DestinationNetBIOSName in command prompt and tell
me what error do you get?

Hi,
I tried it with server network PCs and servers and the result was always the
same: it list the shared resources on those systems and typed at the bottom:
The command completed successfully.
Thanks

OK, try "net view \\DestinationNetBIOSName" and then net send and then in
command prompt enter "nbtstat -c", please post result here.

Hi,
I confirm the followings:
1 - In the same domain, some PCs can send but others can not.
2 - nbtstat -c lists remote NetBIOS names in the cache name table. It
starts with the NetBIOS name, trip cost (I guess) in brackets which is mostly
20, Type and all are unique, Host IP address and, last, Life in seconds and
all are 602. One odd thing is that the DC had to entries, one with a NetBIOS
name and a trip cost of 20 and the other with the FQDN and a trip cost of 55.
Hope to have informed.
Thanks
Yba

Hi!

The number in brackets is not "trip cost" but service code.
<computername> 00 U Workstation Service
<computername> 01 U Messenger Service

<computername> 20 U File Server Service

U - unique

You should see 01 if messenger is enabled!

Is your network segmented? Do you use WINS server on your network?
