Is there a way to send a pop up message to everyone on the network? Novell
had a built in feature for this which works with either single users or
groups of users. Now we're using Windows 2003 server. Some of the
computers on the network are running Windows 2000. Some of them are running
Windows 98. The only thing we've found is something called Win Popup, which
is a program that needs to be installed and started on each PC? Is there a
better way?

With Win9x, you will need winpopup when you use Net Send.

That's what I said. We found the Winpopup thing, which needs to be
installed and running on each PC, and is not installed and running by
default. I was wondering if there's a better way, a command actually built
in to the server software like the Novell net message that we don't have to
do anything to individual PCs to use.

You may send the message from the server to the all connected users,
by
Net send /users text.....

Windows NT/2000/2003 receive the message , but for Windows 95/98/me
you need to use Winpopup.

Also, take a look to the LanTalk - http://www.cezeo.com

So, apparently the answer is no Windows Server 2003 has NO messaging
capability. We want to be able to send messages to users from only certain
PCs specified with rights to do so, and send to Windows 2000 and Windows 98
PCs WITHOUT installing anything additional. Novell Client software could do
that. Apparently Microsoft didn't feel the need for that functionality.
Microsoft is the Borg. You must adapt (upgrade). They really don't want us
running Windows 2003 Server with Windows 98 PCs, but the company here does
not want to spend the money to upgrade everyone's OS. For now, we're just
sending emails and hoping everyone checks their email right away or uses the
Outlook notification popups.

I looked at the LanTalk and of course it is software you have to purchase.
I don't know if it does anything Winpopup doesn't do, but Winpopup is all
the functionality we need. We just want to be able to use that
functionality with something native to the networking software. Winpopup is
an additional program to install. We don't want to and shouldn't have to
install anything for this. We liked Novell better for certain things like
this, but we upgraded the server hardware and the big boss decided to switch
to all Microsoft.

You may use console 'net send' command to send messages. If you don't
like command promptt, try to use WinMessenger from
http://www.winpopu.com - it is completely compatible, but running with
very nice GUI.
