Anyone know what extra's have been added to the
Netgear DG834 when it becomes available.
I have been told it will be around £95-100.
Will it be worth waiting for ?
Or shall I get the 814

814 is end of life from now. the 834 is the same shape and colour etc, but
has a proper SPI firewall and "better" software. Basically i sell the
things.

Maybe the 834 is a working 814 ? There is still SO much wrong with the 814
is near unusable.

If the 834 is a replacement for the 814 and netgear stop support it doesnt
bode well, we're on the 9th firmware release and it STILL doesnt reconnect
properly.

I've had my 814 for less than a year, and it works ok for me at the moment.
What advertised features of the 814 don't work? It'll be required to support
VPN in the next few months, will it do this? If it's going to have problems
then I'll be sending it back.

Absolutely don't agree with this at all! I have had a DG814 for 6 months
now and it has been mostly flawless - it just WORKS!

: properly.

Perhaps for you - it reconnects just fine for me (Firmware 4.9RC3)

What doesnt work depends on what firmware release you had.

To summarise the common points:

It totally crashes requiring a power off reset with lots of UDP traffic
(like P2P). Seems like its a memory allocation problem or limit in its NAT
table.
It conflicts with certain CISCO equipment used by providers and doesnt send
standard PPP information. The result is lockups and refusal to connect.
Pre 4.9 any line synch or disconnection remote end the router would just sit
there and refuse to even look like connecting without a power off reset
Pre 4.9 the NTP didnt work and was actually running a DoS attack on a
university server!
The HTML gets corrupted in webmin
It drops PPP connection for ANY changes including things like email logging,
password changing or NAT changing
Email logging doesnt work.
The router crashes randomly for no reason requiring a power off reset
It disconnects PPP but wont reconnect without being reset.

On my router, a power off reset needs a power off of 20 minutes - any less
than that on powering back up it wont bother looking for line synch.

Im sure ive missed some of its more annoying features. Next time it crashes
i'll remember then. Its been up 2 days so im due one.

Depends on the disconnect type, if its a local end line synch loss or remote
end since RC1 it'll reconnect. If the remote end drops PPP it wont
reconnect.
It may depend if your isp is using cisco equipment which the non standard
PPP command set in the 814 conflicts with too.
