Net Crawl Functionality

I am looking for a detailed account of HOW the Net Crawl feature in
XP/ME/2003 works. Does it really on the old SMB/Browser service? Is it
based on SSDP? Every Google I've done comes up with how to disable it but
not how it works. Can someone point me to a good resource or provide a
starter here? That would be SUPER!
