My mother has a desktop (old) computer in Brooklyn but no broadband
access. When I visit, I am able to access the net using my Dell
centrino notebook via someonr else's broadband connection. I have no
idea whose it is but it sure beats dialing-up when I visit my mom.
What would I need to buy to make her desktop pick up the same signal?

TIA

Theft is discouraged in this newsgroup, but if you buy a wireless 802.11b
client tell us how it goes.

Entity Arawak spoke thus:

Just get permission, and/or offer them a few bucks.

A USB add-on would be easiest, if the PC has a USB port. They're cheap too.

U could be charged with theft of services. Find the owner and give them a
few bucks for access. Also if they see you they can block you. Best to be
honest up front. T

How did you know the SSID of the access point to begin with?

You have several options. Internally, you could add a wireless PCI
card. Externally, you could add either a USB adapter or wireless
client bridge.

Many APs are by default in a promiscuous mode where they broadcast the
SSID. Many wireless adapters have a utility which displays the details
of any APs in range. My 3Com card's utility showed me mine, plus the
ones of my neighbours on each side. Both sensibly had other security
measures in force.

Be careful if it's Win98 -- you need to upgrade to Win98SE, or buy some extra
software ($50) to get either a PCI or USB wireless card to work. Even then,
some computers of that vintage have problems with it. So if this could be a
problem, use a regular ethernet card, and an ethernet wireless adapter, like a
Linksys WET11 or WET54G.

Impossible to tell. Surrounded by apartment buildings as well as multi
family homes.
