I'm going to need to access the internet directly during a visit to
Manhattan next week. I'm going to be using Windows Remote Desktop to connect
to my machines here in Washington state, so I need more than just web
browser access.

I can bring my own laptop and a WiFi card. Anyone know where I can rent this
service in New York City, and what it costs?

Here in Seattle they've started offering a service like this in Starbucks
stores. Don't know if this technology is installed on the east coast, yet.

I would hope you also have VPN, but that's a different story.

They have Starbucks in NYC. If you already have a T-Mobile phone, it's
$19.99 per month nationwide.

You might also have a look at some free hot spots

When accessing the internet you should have some security. I suppose
wirelesss is no more so than wired, but I try to always use some
encryption. VPN to work, which in turn protects normal web surfing,
https on any web page that offers it, ssh for my unix shell account, and
a personal firewall like Norton Personal Firewall, or the free ZoneAlarm.

I read somewhere that McDonalds was giving away 1 hour of airtime to
folks that bought a meal there. You could also buy more time at the
register.

It seems they were doing this at 10 McDonalds in NYC.
