I have a new XP Pro desktop, and an old one in a different room running
W98.

I want to set up a wireles network, and bought a LinkSYS router WRT54G
and USB adaptor WUSB54G on a salesman's recommendation, but found that
the adaptor needs W98SE, so I will return it.

I see that Netgear MA101 seems the least expensive adaptor, and specs
say it's compatible with W98.

Can anyone confirm that this will work before I place an online order ?
Are there any special considerations due to components being from
different manufacturers ?

Any external adapter (i.e. one which connects to your PC via an Ethernet
cable) should work fine. You will want to have an up to date copy of
Internet Explorer though as most of these devices use a web interface to
configure them.

I don't understand your response. I am trying to make a wireless
connection from the Linksys router to the desktop running W98. There
is no cable involved.

I have a similar setup. I have placed my Linksys WRT54GS near the win98
machine and ran a 1m cat5 cable from the router into the T10/100 ethernet
card that I installed on the win98 computer. I have connected the WUSB54GS
to the XP machine.
Installed and ran within 15 minutes.
Unless you realy can't have the router near your win98 machine, maybe this
configuration would be the solution for you.

The ISP cable is wired into the room with the XP machine. The W98
machine is the other end of the house. My question was whether there
is any reason to suspect that the NetGear UBS adapter that I was
considering might not work.

It's very hard to find a wireless networking adapter that works well
with the original version of Windows 98.

I wouldn't buy the MA101. Even if it works, it won't be able to use
the full capabilities of the WRT54G router: the 802.11g standard and
WPA encryption. The MA101 can only use the slower 802.11b standard,
and it only supports WEP encryption.

I've had so many problems getting wireless networking adapters to work
on my clients' Windows 98 computers that I'm now only installing
gaming adapters or wireless Ethernet bridges. These are
self-contained wireless networking devices that connect to a
computer's wired Ethernet port. They require no driver installation
and work with any device (computer or gaming console) that has an
Ethernet port.

There are adaptors, often sold as something like a "games adaptor", which
allow a wired ethernet port on the Win98 machine to connect to a small box
which then does wireless to your access point. Look at the Netgear WGE111
for example or the D-Link DWL-810+ (although this is only a 10MBps device).

So the connection is...

W98-- wire -- WGE111 . . . wireless . . . Access point/WinXP.

The comment about IE still applies because the WGE111 will present a web
server to the W98 box, which is how you configure it.
