Hi

I'm after some help with reducing network traffic over an ISDN router which
is used to connect a XP Pro PC to a Windows 2003 DC. The 2003 DC runs DNS
for the XP Pro machine, and I've already turned off or reduced the following
DFS Client
DNS refresh
Group Policy Refresh
NTP Client

I'm still getting traffic from the PC to port 445 (SMB) on the DC approx
every 15 mins, and also some to the DNS port 53 and Kerberos 389. Has anyone
done this before? I've had this configuration working happily with NT 4 WS
and Server in the same set up with the PC checking in every 12 hours

Any Ideas?
Cheers

Thank you
I'd already got the Browsing document, and I thought I had most the settings
in the other link for 2000 sp2 (i'm running xp sp 1)
My other solution is to not put DNS on the PC, and have it use a VPN to
connect properly.... 3 days and not a single phone call

Well, good for the phone calls (or lack of!).

But DNS doesn't have anything to do with browsing.

Ok. That can actually affect Exchange and other application functionality.
Just wanted to mention that, just in case.

we going with Exchange 2003, and so far no probs with testing. The rest will
show up in testing, and worst case it can be another application on a
Terminal Server which we're going to have anyway
thanks anyway

No problem. Good luck with your testing and migration/upgrade. Just an FYI,
here's an article stipulating that Exchange requires NetBIOS:

837391 - Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange 2000 Server require NetBIOS name
resolution for full functionality:
