Three days of trying I give up. Need to install IP for
DSL connection. Win98SE. Control panel, Network, no
Microsoft network listed, only Windows Family Logon and
something else. Control panel, system, device manager,
only network adapters are Dial up Networking and the
Netgear NIC I installed Friday. Add/Remove Programs,
Windows components is blank. I have most likely whacked a
file or registry entry trying to keep 98 lean and
efficient. I thought I was on the right track yesterday
with list of control panel files. I already have
\windows\system\netcpl.cpl and inet.cpl. I do not find
network.cpl on harddrive or 98 CD. Hope I do not have to
re-load 98.
Hope one of our wiser users can help. Thanks.

you need to add "client" ( client for microsoft networks)

you need to have your network adapter installed (NIC)

then add "protocol" tcp/ip ...it should then bind to your nic

hope that helps :>

I will check this evening, but pretty sure I tried. The
protocol 'ADD' did not offer any protocols, just blinked
at me.

then you have "other" problems....

try booting to safe mode and removing all adapters in control panel

then reboot and try setting up your network again

if you can still not see anything under protocols...then post back with that
problem :>

I expect 'other problems' is the correct answer.
Over the years I have ripped everything out of 98 I did
not need. Will start with the adapter again and see where
I go. May decide to just re-install, C:\ partition is
only Win98, everything else is on D:\ partition. I would
hate hunting for device setup disks.

Appears your instructions have me on course, just not
complete yet. Removed NIC, reboot, PnP installed, no
change. Removed NIC, reboot, cancel Pnp, used hardware
wizard to install, Windows asked for CD and installed many
files. Couple of reboots later I had Network Neighborhood
icon which was new. In trying to get Windows back to my
save last week, I wrecked something. Formatted C: this
morning and left Win98 CD installing. See if I can get it
right tonight. My first Windows disaster and none of the
tools I have were any help, learned a lesson the hard way.
Thanks for the information, sorry I did not ask last
Saturday instead of wasting three days.
