Need help - DUN Failure

I have a recurring failure that always follows the 3 step
scenerio below when it fails. This happens probably 1 or 2
times out of every 10 dial ups, the remaing 9 or 8 times
work fine.

1. DUN fails to establish a connection, "Unable to
establish a connect" is reported.
2. I attempt to connect a second time. Connection appears
to work, because no error is reported and the connection
dialog minimizes to the system tray as it would do on a
successful connection. But the connection details show that
the amount of data transfer sent and recieved are both
showing as somewhere between 300 and 1000, typically around
360. No internet browsing is possible as no more transfers
either direction will occur. At this point you can
disconnect, and reconnect as many times as you want and it
will stall at the same spot. The only way to get DUN
working successfully is to reboot. BUT
3. Reboot after the DUN failure ALWAYS hangs at the
"Windows is shutting down" screen. A hard reset is the only
thing that will work at this point. I do not have this
shutdown problem under normal conditions, only when the
failure occurs. I do not have fast shutdown enabled.

This has been going on for a very long time and I would
really like to eliminate this aggrivation. If this scenerio
has a known solution please post it!

Thanks.
gm

Random failures are often near impossible to troubleshoot since apparent
random occurrences may have to happen in just the right sequence to
cause the problem. I would take a look at the possibility that some
program(s) running in the background is responsible. I can tell you
right now that if you have a fair amount of programs running, it may not
be an easy task:

Thanks for the input Ron. I understand and have used the method you are
suggesting in situations where the failure is repeatable. I can see it
taking a lifetime to go through the process of elimination for debug of a
intermittent problem like I am having. I am hoping since the problem,
when it does occurr, always has the same characteristics, and that someone
will recognize the problem and already have found a solution to post. I
will keep my fingers crossed!
