This router has worked perfectly for 1-1/2 years. Suddenly it doesn't work
after adelphia.net outage. Has recovered from previous Adelphia outages with no
problems. I can still access Internet by connecting cable modem directly to
computer via ethernet cable, but not through router. When modem is plugged into
router, activity lights don't blink on router or modem. Also, all LAN lights
are solidly lit, even when no computer is currently using the router. I don't
recall seeing this before. Is it really possible that the router died
simultaneously with ISP outage?

Same happened to my D-Link DI-604. Instead of getting a solid green LED
when I connected any computer, it flashed so fast that you could just
make out that it was flickering. The connected computer kept bouncing
between thinking it was connected and then not connected. The router
had died. Even without the router connected to the cable modem (to
eliminate its traffic), any powered computer (not itself generating
traffic) should make the D-Link's LED go solid to show a successful link
status, but instead the LED just flashed rapidly. I couldn't get it to
ever link properly with any computer, but the computers all linked
properly when connected to the cable modem. Replaced the router (with a
Linksys) and everything worked fine again. D-Links seem to die at just
under 2 years (which puts them outside the 1-year warranty).

D-Link has more features and is cheaper than Linksys but my D-Link died
in just under 2 years and I've seen three D-Links at work die in 4
years. The D-Links run hotter than the Linksys, so you can't stack them
(there is no forced airflow through the case to eject the heat, and
stacking them would make each one higher get warmed by the one below).
Although I replaced it with a Linksys BEFSR41, which has shown longer
survivability than D-Link, I was disappointed that the Linksys, which
cost almost twice as much, was missing some nice features that the much
cheaper priced D-Link had, like the ability to set fixed IP addresses by
MAC address in its DHCP server (so you could leave your hosts configured
for DHCP but still decide who would get a static IP address back at the
DHCP server in the router), along with better firewall rules. If I was
to get another D-Link, I would snap out the middle tang in the
ventilation holes to make them larger to let it breath better (i.e.,
eject the heat better since the holes are much too restrictive). The
D-Links definitely run hotter.

In most cases the ISP modem needs resetting when changing attached
PC/router.
If it doesn't help, the power supply of the DLink might be the culprit so
replacing that might solve it.
