Hi,

A friend ask me what is required to setup to do this:
setup a webcam outdoor at more than 300m (900ft) from the first desktop
available.

I have only the power available where the webcam will be.

ideally I'm looking for a wireless link between the cam and the router.
due to the topology, if I'm using a cable to connect the cam to the router,
the distance will be 500m (more than 1500ft)

because the wireless (if used) will connect only the webcam to the router, I
can use specific antennas and/or booster
maybe I can setup 2 routers (1 in the office and the second near the webcam)

does anybody as some experience in this setup?
can you recommend some hardware? (webcam, wireless router or any other
component)

part of the requirements...
the webcam will not move and the webcam must support cold temperature... I
mean -20c (-4f) or less (happy Canada...)
it's possible to setup the cam into a tiny house.

does the dlink products can be used?
http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=510

I have to provide some ideas and budget in 2 weeks... so...
thanks for your help!!!

Jerome.

Hey Jerome,

point to point network - buy two directional wireless 'antennas' &
point them at themselves to create the 'link' between PC & Webcam
Router --> Cat 5 --> Desktop
Router --> Cat 5 --> Antenna#1 --> Wireless --> Antenna #2 --> Cat 5 --
> Webcam

access point network - buy an access point that will broadcast a
signal - many wireless devices within range can connect to it
Router --> Cat 5 --> Desktop
Router --> Cat 5 --> Access Point --> Wireless --> Antenna #1 --> Cat
5 --> Webcam

>I have only the power available where the webcam will be.

That is fine, the anteanna will require power as well (direct to
outlet, or power over ethernet)

Sounds like you know already... Cat 5 has a recommended limit of 300m

Try not to use a router as a signal booster, or repeater. Possible
but could cause you headaches. If you have multiple routers you would
have to allow rules for your traffic flow at each router. Having 2
routers on the same network can be very bad, careful.

I am using an Axis 2130PTZ camera, very good, can be used as
survalience camera even.
I used Telex Communications antennas and access points. Line of sight
for 10miles, I am using them for houses about 7km apart. Two of the 7
are flakey (think thats why they no longer make them). Hard to
troubleshoot. I'd recommend looking at Cisco, or Motorola. D-link...
maybe might have some ok stuff.

Camera I am using is an outdoor camera with a dome for protection, has
more features than what you require. Haven't tried any others.
Application was to take pictures of a 24 story building every 15
minutes for 3 years for a time lapse video.
