When I setup this computer I put in one network card for connections to
the net, and added firewall software ( firestarter ).

After I got things running I added a second network card for my LAN
( this is the only machine to see the net, that way if someone breaks in
the damage is contained ). When I configured samba I discovered a basic
problem. My LAN would only see my samba shares if I dropped the firewall.

I'm wondering if there is something I didn't do when installing the
drivers for the second card to let Linux ( and the firewall know
that the second card is connected to a LAN )?

PS THe first I configured to use DHCP but for the second card I allocated
a ( local ) address.

Assuming, firestarter is not configuring itself (that's what we expect
of firewall tools), you probably need to setup the second device with
all it's rules.

Assuming, firestarter is not configuring itself (that's what we expect

all its rules.

The rules can be easily added within the GUI. Otherwise you may try a
new configuration.
