Standard cabling will suffer from severe signal attenuation after approx.
100 Meters. The only method around this distance limitation would be to use
an active (meaning self-powered) hub at some point on the span (in your
case, at the 250' mark would be ideal.) However, as your run will
presumably be outdoors, this is unlikely to be a viable option.
Frankly, probably the best option would be to use a wireless network
(contrary to your desires, I know). A standard WNIC has a range of around
300' indoors / 1000' outdoors in an ideal situation. I would suggest you
utilize a uni-directional gain attenna to boost this range and, therefore,
the reliability. I have successfully implemented these antennas in
scenarios exceeding 3/4 mile (line of sight) with a high degree of
reliability.
