Need a client adapter I can point at AP

I'm looking for a 802.11b client adapter that I can point towards an
access point. I tried the Linksys WAP11 but it doesn't have a survey
function to show which access points are available for a connection.
I tried the WAP11 because it allows me to use a patch cable instead of
an antenna pigtail - no signal loss because of a pigtail connection to
a remote antenna. I plan to build a parabolic antenna to direct the
client adapter to the access point that is about 1000 feet away.

Is there another device that behaves more like a client adapter that
has a RJ45 connector? There must be one out there but I haven't found
it.

A bridge wont work because the bridge functionality usually requires
that the access point be of the same manufacturer or even a specific
model.

I realize that Linksys makes a USB connected device - but that becomes
cumbersome if I want the antenna to be 40 feet or so from my PC. Is
there a better alternative?

Thanks
Chris

If i understand you correctly, which i dont think i do,

linksys wet11

the linksys 'gaming adapters' are actually just wireless clients

smc and others make 'media converters' - ethernet to wireless , plug into
your existing ethernet card/connection.

most access points have a client mode - but i dont know about the 'survey'
function - i think you need to 'know' the ssid ... the 'survey' function i
believe is a function of windows xp, not the hardware ?

1000 feet isnt very far if you have line of site. The senao 200mw pc cards
with the external antennas would certainly do the trick. I get close to
1000 feet using smc wireless pcmcia card and a buffalo access point with no
antennas on either.

I'm referring to the Linksys WAP11 - it's an AP and also functions as
a bridge/client.
I guess my question is how do I tell the adapter which access point to
connect to? I believe that I need to specify a SSID. It's
inconvenient to first scout out the available APs with a laptop or PC
and then set the SSID on the AP so that it can connect to it.

I plan to use the AP as a client so that I can place it in a location
away from the PC with a directional antenna. My PCMCIA card doesn't
see the AP I want to connect to unless I move considerably closer.

Perhaps there's an easier way to use the WAP11 that I'm unfamiliar
with.

I looked through the WET11 documentation and it behaves more like a
client - showing which APs it sees. I'll give it a try.
