need advice

I have an SMC 7401 BRA that is working fine as a home modem/router combo
with multiple static IP

but thats not coming free,
I loose one IP that I have to put on the device so it can gateway and by
default I get 50ms pings from the remote site

I have a console only debian box working as samba, named (caching), squid,
apache, listening to stream stations on my stereo and several other things

thought to plug the modem on the box via usb but I was unable to make it
work and could not find any documentation for the drivers or otherwise

now I am looking for some modem so I can work pppoa on the box it self than
the modem, was thinking some kind of internal pci card but need to know if
it has working history, so if anyone has any info that would like to share I
would gladly hear

if you have brand names looking for pstn modem that supports atm
