Hi there,

I have installed a D-Link DSL 502T router at home, for our
internet. My ISP uses PPPoE, which is handled by the router,
while all traffic to/from the router is handled via DHCP
on eth0. The firewalling in the router is active and setup
so everything external is blocked unless instigated from the
internal network...

Do I need to setup a software firewall? (currently I've left
firewalling off). I'm using SuSE 9.2 Pro...

I don't use any other firewall other than the one in my router; SMC-704VBR.
To check how well it works I used:
http://www.canyouseeme.org/
This shows that all my ports are closed. I think that is good enough.

For security, the more layers, the better.

Probably true. I might use Guarddog to setup iptables...that
should prevent anyone getting thru should the router somehow
turn its firewalling off...

I like Guarddog, easy to install and setup. I use it with Mandrake Linux
9.2, along with a router.

Yes. Guarddog just makes sense to me, because it doesn't overcomplicate
the process. The help guide is well written, and doesn't try to baffle
me with iptables tech-speak...
