NDIS - Windows Protection Error

I just built a new PC and get the "Windows Protection Error loading NDIS -
You must restart your computer" on my Win98(1st Edition) bootable partition.
My XP partition works fine. I have a P4 3.0ghz. I found article Q312108 (
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;312108 ) that said
contact MS for the fix (problem with over 2.1ghz CPU's). Too much hassle and
don't want to risk having to pay $35 or more for support (plus, who wants to
pay $35 for a program that cost $90 in 1998--just trying to keep 98 going
for games and other thing that don't need XP). I figure someone else has had
this problem. The problem happened when I installed my onboard net adapter.
I get the error, reboot my PC into safe mode, remove the net adapter from
device mgr., reboot and it finds my net adapter and the whole cycle will
repeat itself. I went to the Marvell site to look for net drivers for W98
(the disk that came with my motherboard would not install) and installed
them. It worked.

I went to Win Update and was updating, i think it was Explorer update. No
problem, rebooted and was working no problem. I thought I had finally got
it.

I next chose to update to DirectX 9.0c. Rebooted and NDIS error again.

Can anyone help me with this? I hope I have supplied enough info as it is
tough to provide all info when you are frustrated trying to install
something that doesn't matter that much. Thanks, Tom.

There is no charge for the hotfix if you can confirm that you need it (and
from the sound of it, you will easily be able to) and ask for nothing else
from Microsoft except the hotfix. The only other possible cure will be to
slow your CPU down below 2.1gHz.

Read it all first. If it's what you are looking for there's a download
link at the end of the page.

That solved the problem. Much thanks Jim. I was a little p'd that MS didn't
have a link to it. That's why I posted on newsgroups hoping someone else had
had the problem before. -Tom

I, too received the NDIS Windows Protection error when attempting to
install a Win98 hard drive from an older, failed system into a new 2.4
GHz computer.

I got the patch from Microsoft, but I can't figure out how to install
it. The affected system, because of the NDIS error, can only boot into
Safe Mode. I copied the patch to the affected system, but when I try to
run it I get "Cannot Run in DOS mode" or something like that. How does
one install this patch?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

-Kevin

When you go into safe mode, go to the device manager and remove your network
card. You will then be able to boot in normal mode and install the patch.
