NDIS&missing vxd files

I gave my parents my old computer - MSI motherboard and
AMD 900MHZ chip and installed their hard drive into it.
It came loaded with Win 98. Everything went fine until I
tried to install the Linksys 10/100 Ethernet card. I
then received errors.

Cannot find a device file that may be need to run windows
application.
The windows registry or SISTEM.INI file refers to this
device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the
associated application using its uninstall or setup
program.

If you still want to use the application associated with
this device file, try reinstalling that application to
replace missing file. Hit any key to continue.

Vnetsup.vxd
And then the same for these files.
Vredir.vxd
Dfs.vxd

I removed the Ethernet card and rebooted but I still got
the errors. Sometimes the computer would reboot and
others it would just hang. I tried placing the missing
files from the Win98 Disk netcab1&10 folders but it never
seemed to do anything positive. In fact everything got
worse. After that I was only able to boot in safe mode.
Finally I was able to boot back in normally... after many
tries. They only need dial up at this point and
everything was working fine until the stupid ethernet
card. How do I return their system to stable working
order? I tried removing reg. entries and the like but to
no avail. I finally restored the reg. to the beginning
and left it at that.

Thanks for any help. I have looked at the Microsoft
support site but it seems that nothing seems to quite fit
for my specific problem. They don't need the card
installed (it's not now), they just need the system to
work/boot normally.

This a common problem. Searching the registry and deleting any references
to these files usually works. If it didn't, then I suggest reinstalling
Windows on top of itself.

Thanks, I've tried that and it didn't seem to work... I
was about to tell them to reinstall Windows (like you
said - on top) and I had them remove the 'Client for
Microsoft' and the 'NDIS2' in the network control panel.
It asked for a reboot and it was done and so far
everythink is working... I'm still waiting for a phone
call though. Anyone else with thoughts?

Thanks

would say to boot to safe mode and remove (all references to ) client and
adapter , then reboot and reinstall...

sounds like you got it

So far so good. My Mom told me that she has booted up a
couple of times now with no errors. I'm still crossing
my fingers though.

Thanks

You need to remove stuff in two areas. First remove the card, and any
driver reference to it. Then, in network neighborhood, remove any reference
to any network component referencing the card. (DO NOT REMOVE any reference
to the dial-up adapter). Do not reboot until both are done.
