Naming computers on network

Hi,

Just wanted to canvas opinions...

On a Windows-type peer-to-peer network each computer has a name, yes?
That's fine, but what do people do when they have dual-boot PCs? If you
had a PC, on a network, that dual-booted Windows XP and Linux, say,
would you name the PC the same thing in each mode or give it different
names?
Issues I can think of are, a) different names might keep it clear what's
active at the time, and b) XP keeps a record of used shares under
Network Places and that might get confusing if 'Name' referred to two
different things depending on which you'd booted.

Silly really, not important, i just wondered what other people did?

Different name for each "mode".

I name them for the machine so I can remember which one I'm on, it's
easier to tell whether I'm in XP or Linux :-)

Ok, that's what I was tending toward. Thanks.

Well, my point wasn't to know which machine or OS I was on. In Xp at
least, under Network Places I see a list of shares I've accessed, such
as "Docs on Fred (PC2)" for example. Now, if Fred might refer to PC2
running XP OR PC2 running Linux, and only one of those cofigs had a
share called Docs, it might foul things up, perhaps? Or at least get
confusing.
That was my thought and why I raised the query.

Cheers, John

Hmm. Maybe I did say, or imply, that. It wasn't my main point though. ;-)

I always use the same hostname in all operating systems on a
particular machine. It's caused me no problems, although it
would be clearer if I hadn't done this!

The only problem I've had with dual-boot is printers. I had a
printer attached to a PC that booted Win2000 and Mandrake Linux,
this meant two networked printers showed up on the other Windows
PC on the network. You had to check was OS the print server was
running before sending a job from the second Windows PC.

My way around this was for the dual-boot machine to advertise to
the workgroup what OS it was running when it booted, using net
send. In Linux, I did this using LinPopUp.
