I could give you Linux based voicemail solutions, but I don't think
it's what you want, and anyway, aren't you going to have the same
noise problems on a PC based voicemail that you have on a stand-
alone TAM?
Can you hear the noise on your phones as well as the TAM playback?

You mention that you have a filter at each extension. Contrary to
what you might that is not ideal.

Ideally you should have a single filter at the master socket, and all
your phone sockets wired from this. Replacement filtered faceplates
for the master socket are availible to make a neat job.

For a test, is it possible to isolate all your extention wiring by
removing the faceplate from your master socket? (assuming it's a
NTE5)

Hi,

I have a BT ADSL line (via Demon) that's connected to a permanently on
Linux box.

Does anyone know of some Linux software that I can use for
voicemail/answer machine?

I've been through several answer machines but all messages are
inaudible. I do have microfilters on all my extension and main phones, I
have tried different answer machines, this problem only goes away when
my PC is disconnected and I need it connected all the time.

Thanks for any ideas.

What you do *actually* want to do?

Hi,

I want the Linux box to answer the phone and take a message if I don't
pick up the phone within (say) 8 rings or x seconds.

The box and the phone are on the same ADSL line.

So, I want some free software that I can use as an answer machine.

Asterisk.

You'll need a TDM interface card of some sorts too. If you want cheap,
search ebay for x100p.

Good luck...

Definitely a possibility but the message limit (10) might be a problem
when I'm away in the Summer.

Asterisk with a Digium card. Probably considerably cheaper to use a
conventional TAM, though.

I have a phone/answermachine (one machine) in the attic and that runs
off the splitter to my ADSL router. And an extension phone on the first
and the ground floor.

I've tried this with microfilters on all phones and just the attic -
smae problem.

If you know of some linux software you could just tell me what it is and
I'll install it.

If it works, good, if not, I haven't lost anything by trying.

No noise on any of the phones It's only on the answermachine playback
and, as I said, I've tried (new) several answermachines, all BT
approved, all with the same problem.

I've tried the isolation method you suggest and it had no effect (ie
still inaudible playback. Playback only works properly if the router is
unplugged and - yes - I've tried 3 diferent routers and same problem.

Basically if someone out there know of any software (if it exists at
all) can you just give me the name.

NB I'm asking if there is some software that can do this NOT software
plus extra hardware for the Linux box.

As others have said, Asterisk is a complete PBX and would industrial-
grade voicemail, but might be overkill in your case, and anyway
you are going to need some FXO hardware to get the PSTN audio
in/out of the computer?
I wonder why the noise only affects the TAM? is it just because it
is louder and comes from a loudspeaker rather than a handset.

Some artefact due to the ADSL, and the sampling frequency of the
digital recorder?

Or the frequency of the bias oscillator in a tape based TAM?

Sorry Arlo I am thinking aloud here and it's probably mainly
rubbish!
