A Mystery: Netstumbler sees my AP but the TCP stack doesn't.

Netstumbler sees my AP, and tells me the right SSID and shows a very
strong signal, but I can't get TCP network connection to work. It's
got a red X thru it. It worked, once, just fine, then I did a lot of
things to my laptop that included reinstalling XP/pro. It hasn't
worked since.

Here's a few points;

Control Panel/Networks says "wireless Network Connection 5". I've only
got one Wifi card, of course. Note: I've installed the orinoco drivers
a bunch of times working on this and I may have confused it. The
"Connection 5" makes me thing it's seeing a non-existant instance of a
network card. I see only two network connections; My CAT5 conection
and my WiFi connection. When I click on the WIFi connection and "view
available connections" I get a grey-ed out panel. Advanced is grey.

In XP Device Management I only see one instance of my card, and the
Orinoco self-test says it's working OK.

I've uninstalled the device, rebooted, and reinstalled, and also
reloaded the card code.

In Netstumbler under Devices I see two WiFI cards, here's what they say;

ORINOCO PC Card (5 volt) ORINOCO
ORINOCO PC Card (5 volt) NDIS 5.1

Netsumbler didn't work until I forced it to use the NDIS stack. I
lookin in XP and can't find what used to be the stack bindings in NT.
I sustect the problem or cure is there. When netstumbler autoselected
it reported that it detected a card but it was malfunctioning.

I think I need to blow away parts of the registery but I don't know
what.

Any Suggestions ?

Thanks.

Al,

Is MAC filtering on in the AP? Check it through the wired LAN to se if the
MAC address for the WiFi card is where it shouldn't be or not where it
should be.

A good try, but no, I have not done any MAC filtering on my AP. I
screwed around with my laptop before I posted this message Saturday
but as of Friday it didn't work with puplic APs, so I don't
think that's it.
