YEAH !!! My previous post I was asking how I could gain a constant
connection by sharing my broadband with my neighbor accross the street. Well
Its seems ok now. I am running a 2-way satellite connection with a USB
modem. My server is running WINXP with ICS. From that into a network
switch/hub in my office.....from that into a wireless router located near
the front of my house...I am using a 13dbi superpass antenna and a 10 ft
antenna cable mounted to the outside of my house..antenna cable of the right
type as to not cause any significant loss.....
At the house across the street which is the recieving end I have a
direction external antenna only about 5dbi pointed through the window at my
anntenna hooked up to a Ethernet Network Bridge.....from that cat5 ethernet
cable wired into the desktop in the basement. Seems ok so far !!!

Questions : I now want to extend the network within the house accross the
street. Can I now put a wireless card in the desktop and a wireless cardbus
adapter in a laptop and run ICS to connect those two in AD HOC mode? Since I
am running ICS on the main server can I change the default IP of ICS
192.168.0.1 to like 192.168.10.1 on other client computers who want to share
the connection to extend the network?

Can I run the bridge directly into a switch/hub and split it from there?

Since I am using ICS to share the broadband I am only using the LAN side of
the wireless router and have DHCP disabled in the router and assign Static
IP's to all the client computers. For those of you who are wondering how to
use ICS with a wireless router ...this is how I did it .

Wireless networking is pretty kewl stuff...FUN FUN.

I am going to now try to share the broadband with a couple of other
neighbors. We live in a semi-rural area with no broadband connection
available. There is DSL 0.5 km down the street on one side and cable 0.5km
down the street on the other side !!!!!! 19 houses in the middle with
nothing....WHAT's UP WITH THAT HAHA !!!! I battled with the local cable
company to extend the line to the remaining houses and it was going to cost
$48 000 to run the line !!! They needed 80% of the 19 houses to agree to pay
$1000 each...Ya right!! I was willing to....but not many others...soooo
2-way Satellite was my only option...so since it is relatively expensive I
set on a mission to share it with some of my unfortunate neighbors ...and to
also share the cost. $85/month for residential service with about $1000
install with hardware. Another $250 to set up a wireless network and about
$120 for each house for hardware to connect to my network.

Is it legal for me to share my broadband? I am aloud to broadcast at 2.4GHZ
without a licsence?

Kewl stuff !!!

Cheers ALL and thanks for the info in advance.

1) Regardless of how you have have Internet access, you can easily share
your WIFI connection. The site below provide antennas, etc.. to extend your
wireless network to your neighbors. If your house is in the middle of the
neighborhood, then I would recommend installing a 15dBi omni directional
antenna on your roof (assuming your have light of sight to all your
neighbors).

2) How far away are you from your neighbors? Do you have to cross the
street? It might be cheaper and more reliable for you to run a coax cable
to your neighbors'

3) If you're using a router, you don't really need ICS. The router does
the job of sharing the Internet connection, so why bother with ICS?
Actually, after re-reading your post, I see you have a USB satellite modem
so that's the reason for ICS. Why not go with and Ethernet modem so that
the Internet sharing is independent of your computer being on or off? By
using ICS you're needlessly complicating your internet sharing and your LAN
configuration.

4) Yes, it's legal for you to share your broadband -- there are no laws
against that. But you maybe violating your agreement with the service
provider and they may seek redress (i.e. cut you off).

5) You can broadcast 2.4GHz without a license. The power at which you're
broadcasting is however regulated. I believe that FCC regulations simply
require that you not interfere with licensed broadcasts. If you live in a
rural area, you should be OK.

6) Another option. If there is DSL 1/2km away, why not ask one of those
neighbors to subscribe to DSL then you can run your own cable from there
(through the backyards if that's possible)
