is it my wife's fault, stage 2

Hello

Starting a new thread on an issue I posted on a couple of days ago, because
I've gathered a lot more info since the original post.

To recap first, I have a Win XP Pro desktop, networked wirelessly to my
wife's WinXP Home laptop. For some time have been able to copy files to and
fro between the two. But started having problems copying SOME jpg files FROM
the laptop TO the desktop. Some jpgs, but not all, started telling me the
file was "locked". Similar problems when I tried to OPEN such files on the
laptop from the desktop.

From that starting point I copied files from the laptop to an external
harddisk with no problems. From the laptop can then open those files.

Tried to read from/copy from that external disk across the network, and same
original problem - messages telling me the files are locked.

But if I take the external disk and plug it into the desktop, no problem -
can open the "locked" files, copy them to the desktop, make them do
somersaults or whatever. It definitely seems to be a network issue, not a
disk or corrupted file issue.

Would appreciate any pointers.

Thanks

Is it a problem with just some random files, or does it affect all files
in a particular directory? I had an issue where C:\temp was shared on
an XP Pro SP1 laptop, and anything in that directory was unusable
(unable to copy, unable to execute) for the same reason you give on a
networked XP Home SP1 PC. Moving the files I wanted to copy/access into
C:\temp\utils and accessing from there was fine. Didn't seem to be a
file permission issue (although the XP file properties for the whole
folder always had a greyed out tick in "read only", suggesting at least
something under there was read only - not that I could find what). In
the end, I just moved everything out of C:\temp, removed and recreated
it, copied everything back in and that solved the issue for me, though
it doesn't answer the "why".

Thanks but that doesn't seem to quite fit - it's only some files, and other
files in the same folder open/copy OK. Both computers have fully updated
SP2, and I tried with anti-virus and firewall disabled on both. It's a
mystery! The actual problem is resolved by the workaround I mentioned, but
I'm curious as to what's going on.

It's just one or two files in a variety of folders, and most files in those
folders copy OK. And as far as I can tell, the only files affected are .jpg
ones

Just a few thoughts...I'm probably miles off, but hey, I could lead
you in the right direction.

Is it always the *same* files that have the problem? I ask as I have a
BMP in one of my game's folders. It is not illegally named not I
cannot delete it...always says file is in use (with game not running
natch). I'll get around to dealing with it one day...

Are the files in questions being used by another app and are you
trying to move rather than copy (not trying to insult your
intelligence with this one).

Best option, is blame the wife as you suggested <g>.

Hi,

In my company, we were having similar problems using network-shared word
files.Trying to resolve it, we could verify some different scenarios:
- The application that opened the file for the last time had blocked.
- The application is still open in the last-opener station, after
performing a copy (copy&paste).

The error message was tipically a "Sharing violation". Microsoft
provided us with an update, but it didn't fix the matter...

So, try to see if you can use those files after closing the application
in the other PC.

rgds.,

You might both be interested in a little utility by a guy called Dr Hoiby,
called "WhoLockMe" - it will tell you which applications are in control of
any inaccessible file under XP (probably any other NT too)

Have a look at http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/index.php

Very easy to use, it adds an option to the context menu. The only
shortcoming is that it won't identify a program that's running on a remote
machine, so it has to be installed on the culprit.
