My router won't change channels

I've got an older wireless router, an SMC Barricade 7004WBR.
Discovered this weekend that there's a few other wireless home
networks in my neighborhood, all on channel 6, like I am. That's
probably why my performance has gotten so sluggish. But when I try to
change channels via the web interface and save, it kicks back an error
message saying "error writing to the router". Odd. I even tried to do
this via the one PC wired to the router. It accepts things like MAC
address additions for mac filtering and other settings changes. I'd
prefer not to reset the router to the factory defaults and start anew.
Any suggestions???

Reset the router to defaults. Check for a firmware update also if you
have not done so already.
