Hi

I have a dsl modem/router to connect to the Internet. I am trying to
find out the router address so that I can telnet it. when I use the
browser to login by typing in the url address box, 192.168.1.1 I get
in the first page some info about the router

Router Information
System Uptime 241 hours 51 minutes
Model NB5 ADSL2+
Serial Number none
Firmware Version 62.51.1-004
Ethernet MAC address 00:30:0A:41:E0:BF
DSL MAC address 00:30:0A:41:E0:C1
USB MAC address 00:30:0A:41:E0:C0

since I am studying some Cisco book, I am trying to draw some kind of
parallelism between what I am reading and what I am finding out from
my own system. mo modem/router is not Cisco but Netcomm.
whats those "last 3" fields above?
which is the MAC address of the router?
why there are 3?
how can I print out the routing table?
whats its ip address? is it 192.168.1.1?

please teach me.

thanks

Hi,

your router has multiple network interfaces, each ones with a specific
unique reference called "mac address"

dsl mac is the interface in which you plug your cable that goes out of your
building.
Ethernet mac address is the interface in which you plug an ethernet cable
linked to your PC.
beside this, it seems that your router also have a USB interface in which
you could plug an USB cable to link to your computer.

I don't think that both ethernet and USB can be used at the same time. The
IP address 192.168.1.1 is the address of either the ethernet or either the
usb depending on which interface is used. this address is assigned by
default to your router, on some router you can change this address. This
address allows you to access your router from your computer.

When you connect your router to the internet (via the DSL interface), your
router would generally receive an IP address from your ISP. If your ISP
doesn't provide your router with an IP address automatically, than you must
receive an IP address from your ISP and you will have to configure this
address in your router.

if this goes well, your router has now 2 IP addresses. One that you use
between your PC and the router and another one that makes your router
visible, accessible from the internet. If you give me this address, I could
be able to access your router and to reconfigure it, change the password,
etc ... but this is generally protected (default configuration), but you can
change this setting (enable remote administration or something like that).

thank you.

the IP which makes my router visible to the internet, is not this the
one that some web sites tell you "your ip address is xxx"?

is not this the one that set dynamically or statically by my isp? thus
it is my PC ip address to the world?

thanks again

xxx is IP address of your router as seen by the internet.
yyy is IP address of a router at your ISP which has connection with other
routers (and is the router to which your router should send packets to the
internet)
zzz is IP address of a server that converts a logical name of a server (eg .
www.microsoft.com to an IP address)
www is the IP address of a backup server in case the server zzz fails.
