Hello All,

I have a Linksys Wireless-G (WRT54G) Broadband Router sitting on top
of my cable modem. My computer has a Linksys Wireless-G PCI card
(WMP54G) in it. I've updated to the latest firmware and drivers for
both products. Everything works beautifully. I don't broadcast my
SSID and I have WEP64 enabled, you know...some of the basics for
rookies to secure their systems.

Here's my dilemna. My neighbor just bought a Wireless-B network. Now
whenever his is on, my service degredates to 1.0 or 2.0 Mbs, sometimes
even just disconnecting and trying to connect to his (he hasn't
secured his).

Please, please, please tell me what I have to do to optimize my system
and improve my service. Contacting customer support at Linksys has be
useless as they cannot even tell me why my network disconnects
whenever my telephone is on.

Thanks all.

Hey You!

1. Knock at you neighbors door and say hello.

2. Ask for the RF-channel you neighbor is using.

3. Go to your flat and coose another channel.

Normally it shouldn't be a problem to use a second WLAN
nearby if the channels are apart.

Good luck!

Jimmy

If you turn off your wireless AP and turn off encryption for your adapter
then your PC should pick up next door's wireless network.
You can then read off the channel setting and make sure your setup is well
away.
[If you don't fancy going round and asking].

It wouldn't be a US spec 2.4GHZ DECT cordless phone by any chance?
If so, the phone is interferring with the wireless network.

It does with XP, if there is a tick in allow windows to mess with my network
settings, It will allways jump to something broadcasting an SSID from somethign
that isnt.

How about grabbing 2 brews out of your fridge, taking a walk over to you
neighbour and work together on the problem? Chances are he is having about
the same problem.

A good neighbour is worth his weight in gold!

I had set up a client's home wireless with typical security. That same week, his neighbor got a WAP and ran it UNCONFIGURED right outta the box. This caused some mayhem. I discovered this because one PC in my client's home (furthest from his own WAP) would drop the default connection and pick up DHCP from the neighbor's setup.

Being curious, I used the affected PC to access the neighbor's router via the web-interface. The dummy had no WEP, used the default SSID and the router password was still the factory default of "admin". I changed the password and disabled the wireless operations (so he'd get the message).

He obviously learned how to secure his wifi (or hired someone to configure it properly). I found the same SSID about a week later but it was on a different channel and was finally using WEP.

What a laff.
