Will my line hack 2mb?

Attenuation is around 59-61db, never more.
SNR is very stable at 18 db

Due to the unusually favourable noise margin at this attenuation, ISP
is prepared to try a manual order to 2mb, even though the line is of
course outside BT's official 40-43db limit. However, ISP is concerned
that if it doesn't work, BT may regrade not to current 1mb, but to 512
-- ouch! Since the attenuation is sometimes 1db above even the 1mb
limit, this is definitely a possibility.

Current 1mb is capable of 100KB/s d/ls and hasn't dropped a beat since
it was upgraded from 512mb a few months ago (also a manual order due to
BT line checker). Line is on the long side (8 miles or so) but rural
and we are one of the first premises, hence the atypical stats. Using
Vigor 2600G router.

Opinions welcome on the likelihood of 2mb being stable (assuming manual
order is successful and the line is upgraded)... I think it will work
but if there's less than a 7/10 chance of having a reliable service I
may not risk it.

Personnally, I think you could get 1Mb/s - but definitley not 2. The SNR
margin isn't that great. BT's limit for anntenuation is 43db - and you
are well over that. I seen people with 40db and similar SNR margins have
their line downgraded to 1Mb/s due to intermittent disconnections.But by
all means - give it a go if you think it will work!

I wasn't too clear in my post -- I'm actually on 1mb at the moment,
which is why I *think* the SNR looks pretty good for 2mb.

This *SHOULD* work fine as you will only lose ~6dB SNR with the upgrade.

I got 2Mb via a manual upgrade but my attenuation is a LOT better than
yours (46dB) and, even after the upgrade, my SNR is typically still 12-16dB.

My figures are

Upstream
SNR 22 dB Upstream
Attenuation 31.5 dB

Downstream
SNR 9 dB
Attenuation 59 dB

At a guess I would say 2meg is not possible. Would you agree?

(I currently have 1Meg)

I would agree. The important figures are above. The upgrade will always
lose ~6dB in SNR. IMHO what you would be left with (~3db) would probably
not be enough for a totally stable connection.

How about my figures? I currently have a 1MB connection. Anyone think I
could get 2mb?

If those figures are accurate it may be possible for you to hold a 2Mb
connection with reasonable stability, if they're not it's a whole
different ball game & yes I'm saying that the figures which get from
your router may not be accurate..

These figures are VERY close to what mine were at 1Mbs and I get totally
stable 2Mb service with a SNR varying slightly over time between about 12
and 18dB - anything close to (or in) double figures for SNR should basically
give a 100% stable connection.

Brian, I have 1MB at the moment, but would like to move to 2MB.

My figues are as follows (according to a DG834g MkII running 1.05.00
firmware)

Downspeed 1152 kbps
Attenuation 47 db
SNR 31 db

I think from the rest of the discussion, that these figures should get me
2MB reliably, is that right Brian?

Also, does anyone know how accurate the figures are from DG834G generally?
