I recently bought a D-Link DSL-300G+ modem to give ADSL access to my
Toshiba Tecra notebook via an ethernet connection.

It was very easy to set up. I just had to enter the relevant settings
pertaining to Demon Internet into the modem and ensure that Internet
Explorer was set to 'Automatically detect settings' in the LAN settings
box.

It's worked fine - until today. I can get it to connect and even ping an
outside address but it won't entertain any web sites. Initially this
morning I could get a very slow connection but now there's nothing. All
I get is 'The page cannot be displayed'.

I know the ADSL is OK because I've got it working lovely here on my
desktop PC after switching cables.

I've shut down the Norton firewall but still no go.

So what's the score? What can I do to see what has happened please?

We bought a D-Link 504 modem router four weeks ago worked fine for
three weeks but for the last week if has been re setting itself to
factory default settings every 24 hrs or so this is the second one of
these that we have had that is devoloped this fault .
I got in touch with D-Link support in London on Wednesday yes we will
send out a replacement but had to fax a copy of the sales invoice and
reply to two emails before they would send it . The replacement
arrived yesterday or so I thought but on opening the box I saw inside
a D-Link DSL-300G+ !!!!!!! .
Called them again ok we will send the 504 out Royal mail special
delivery you will have if by 12.30 tomorrow like hell I will its 4.30
now and our delivery office closes at 12.30. me thinks D-Link
are a load of shit products and their useless staff .

Astute observation sir. I've not yet come across another company that
manufactures products as unreliable as D-Link. Customer support is just so
poor, half of them have a problem speaking english. Not a good sutuation
when you need to discuss a technical issue. I would never buy D-Link again,
even if the prices were slashed by 75%, life is too short.

I want to defend DLINK at this point. I base my opinion on my experience of
DLINK products used over the last 5 years.

I have used DLink network cards, hubs, switches and printer servers. We use
over 200 DLINK DFE 530TX network cards and I can honestly say that not one
of them has ever failed. Driver support is superb, online support is superb,
telephone support whilst not instant is of good quality. We have around 18
or so DLink hubs / switches and have had 2 faults, one dead 24 port switch
and a 16 port switch with a dead port, both swapped out within a couple of
days.

DLink are my first choice supplier for network hardware, Allied Telesyn for
our backbone.

Andy.

They are absolutely the tops Andy they cannot tell the difference
between a 504 modem router and a 300G modem !!the last words I had
from the service center on Friday lunchtime was we will get the 504
out to you this afternoon royal mail special delivery and you will
have it by 12.30 tomorrow ( Saturday ) but it wa sen't delivered
Saturday . Tomorrow our phone line is going to be white hot I can tell
you !!!!!!! you can praise them up to the hilt if you want Andy but I
think they are total shit .

My experience with D-Link tech support is terrible. I don't think D-link
make bad products though, but if you do have problems don't expect them to
help.

Just my two-pence worth.

Are you able to talk to the modem? The web server in the modem should tell
you more about whats going on.

Did you use another modem or did you use the D-link. The D-link is not a
router and therefore locks itself to a PC, but it can be reset.
I'd guess you wouldn't think the modem is faulty if you switched ethernet
cables so I assume you have another modem in your PC, but I also heard that
some ISPs do the same, in that case you need to ask them to reset the
hardware mac address of your equipment (or rather their registration of it),
but I'm reasonably sure Demon doesn't do this. I was able to swop over a
couple of modems.

I also use Demon with the D-link and about once every 3 months it locks up
and behaves strangely, but I don't know if its my router, or the line. The
rest of the time it works nicely with the Buffalo G54 router which I
hardware to the desktop and wireless to the lap top.

Like others I have had a bad experience with their customer support who told
me it wasn't designed for use with a router. An alternative 'Modem only' is
the X-Modem from ADSL nation.
